The Twitter/X Character Guide
Key Twitter/X Specs
- Max Characters: 280 (for standard accounts)
- Link Wrapping: Every URL always counts as exactly 23 characters
- Emojis: Emojis count as 2 characters due to double-byte Unicode representation
- Hashtag Sweet Spot: 1 to 2 tags maximum
How Twitter Counts Links
Regardless of whether your URL is 10 characters (`google.com`) or 150 characters, Twitter/X wraps all URLs in their custom `t.co` shortener. Because of this, **every URL counts as exactly 23 characters** toward your 280 limit.
Our Caption Cleaner models this behavior: when Twitter is selected, the character counter will calculate links as exactly 23 characters, giving you a 100% accurate count before you publish.
Emoji Counting Rules
Twitter uses a character-weighting scheme where emojis (being higher-plane Unicode characters) count as exactly 2 characters. Even complex compound emojis joined with ZWJ characters are normalized in their count.
Hashtag Spacing
Do not overload tweets with tags. Engagement drops by up to 17% when using more than two tags on Twitter/X. Focus on one or two key keywords.
